4WD skills weekend

Sand driving and recovery fundamentals, an hour from Brisbane.

Two days from nervous to confident

A practical skills weekend on Bribie Island's beach and inland tracks — the closest real sand driving to Brisbane. This is non-accredited training: no assessment pressure, just a professional trainer, your own vehicle, and the skills that make everything else possible. It's also the ideal warm-up for K'gari, and a prerequisite pathway for our advanced trips.

Sample program. The running order flexes with tides and conditions on the day. Training runs under our safety management system, including a dedicated safe work method statement for 4WD practical delivery.

Day 1 — Understand it, then drive it

Morning theory: how a 4WD actually works (traction, low range, diff locks) · loading a vehicle safely · journey planning · basic techniques · reading the track — identifying hazards, assessing risk, picking the line.

Afternoon practical: sand driving — tyre pressures, momentum, hills, ruts and soft stuff, on the beach where it's safe to get it slightly wrong.

Day 2 — When it stops, and how to unstick it

Morning theory: self-recovery through driving technique first · recovery equipment fundamentals — shovel, traction boards, snatch straps — and the physics that make them dangerous when misused.

Afternoon practical: staged recovery scenarios — you bog it, you plan it, you recover it, with the trainer managing the risk.
